Abstract

As women movement has been revived in Pakistan since 2018, there has been a discourse related to women rights, gender roles and gender equality in society. This study purpose is to explore gender representation in media and to evaluate if it still stereotypical or the media narratives has evolved over the period of time. Many research has been done on television dramas, this study will add to it by analyzing gender representation in drama serial Kuch Ankahi. Through discourse analysis, findings show different types of gender representation and the characters in Kuch Ankahi challenge the patriarchal privilege. Supposing social constructivism theory, we believe that these images of gender representation in drama affect our perception of what a man or a woman should be. Based on the core principles of social constructivism, we think that our understanding of what a man or a woman is is influenced by these representations of gender in motion pictures. Our findings imply that while the characters generally uphold patriarchal privilege, occasionally some of them do not. But the results are favorable.
